Respiratory listening event - 21 September 2011
North West Respiratory Clinical Pathway Team is responsible for implementing the National COPD strategy in the North West. The team comprises of three Respiratory Leads (1) Dr John Williams, Consultant, Respiratory Integrated care – NHS Halton and Warrington (2) Dr Stephen Gaduzo, GPwSI in Respiratory Medicine, Stockport and (3) June Roberts, Consultant Nurse, Salford Royal Hospital, who are supported by a Project Manager – Preeti Sud
The team engages with various stakeholders through networking events or clinical best practice days. To help listen to patients views the team organised an event on 21 Sep 2011 for Respiratory care patients. Patients were invited through British Lung Foundation and PCT/FT contacts to ‘Listening to your voice: Patient and carer perspective on Respiratory Care delivered in North West’ day. A lead patient from each health economy was expected to attend the day and provide views on their experience with Respiratory Care in the North West.
26 patients and carers attended the day. Their views have been captured in a report as well as a CD. The views expressed will be circulated with Respiratory teams throughout North West. They will consider these when designing/changing/improving their services.

Inspiration NW a programme run by the Service Experience Directorate of NHS Northwest facilitated a 3-hour session with network members on understanding the COPD experience from the patients and carer’s perspective. The purpose of the session was to gain patient and carer perspectives on respiratory care in the NW based on:
- What happened to them
- How they felt about their experiences
And to
- Map what patients felt and when they felt it against ‘touch-points’ of the COPD pathway
- Provide key messages for NW Respiratory Team
The day was informal and interactive. People were encouraged to say what matters to them, to respect one another’s experience to listen hard and be supportive.
Key messages focussed on the perspectives of patients and carer’s journey at the beginning, living day to day and when they needed help.
A simple approach was taken to maximise engagement of the group in personal reflection and tabletop discussion. An engagement pact was agreed: -
- Say what matters to you
- Everyone’s experiences are unique so please respect them
- Lets listen hard
- Be supportive
Patients and carers sat at tables to focus on one or three specific parts of the care journey: ‘the beginning’, ‘living with your chest’ or ‘when you need help’. People were asked to select which table they would like to sit at. Individual reflections were capture on yellow post its and then shared with other people on the table to identify common themes and differences
During the lunch break the post –its were added to the core pathway which ran along the wall (bar!) so people had the opportunity to look at what others had written and to add more personal reflections along the journey.
After a lunch break the facilitator walked through the pathway and highlighted some of the identified touch points of ‘what happened to people’ from session one. Patients and carers were again asked to focus on one specific part of the care journey and people were asked to select which table they would like to sit at. Individual reflections were captured again but on pink post-its this time as people were asked to focus in the emotions they felt.
