Janet Butterworth MSc, BA(Hons)

Deputy Director of Service Experience
Janet is a health management specialist who is passionate about improving the experience of care for those who use health services.
Janet is Deputy Director of the Service Experience Directorate at NHS North West which runs a programme of work known as Inspiration NW dedicated to raising the profile of service experience and developing capacity and capability for improvement. Currently the Directorate is also working in partnership with the Department of Health to deliver the national Patient Experience Policy Programme.
With over twenty years of service in the NHS Janet has extensive operational, commissioning and strategic leadership and management experience and has led a number of quality improvement programmes which have resulting in measurable and reported improvements for patients and staff. Her work has been influential both in the NHS and other organisations providing health services.
Janet has experience of business development in the independent medical sector which has given her a valuable understanding of the added and essential ingredient of good customer care sitting alongside clinical quality and value for money in ensuring excellence in health care services.
In 2005 she became the first ‘Health Service Journal’ Scholar when she was awarded a scholarship to study for a Masters degree at Durham University. Janet has a Bachelor degree in social science and a Masters degree in clinical management.
Janet was instrumental in setting up a local community charity in her home town which continues to serve local families with affordable preschool care. Janet is Chair of Governors at a local primary school and also chairs the management committee of a thriving afterschool and holiday club which independently supports the school and community.
Janet is the proud mother of four young people and lives with her husband, John, in their family home in Bury, Lancashire.
