Launch of Inspiration NW’s Children’s Care Cards

Inspiration NW’s framework for service improvement takes into account two dimensions of care:

  • ‘What happened to me’
  • ‘How I felt about it’

Inspiration NW Care Cards were developed to explore the ‘How I felt about it’ element of experience by placing eight aspects of emotional care on Care Cards for adult care with the purpose of supporting health professionals to facilitate conversation between themselves and their patients and relatives about what matters most to them in the care they are receiving. This methodology has been shown to support staff to make changes to care to help improve the experiences of care for patients in real time. Patients have reported feeling that their care has improved and that they have been listened to. See the Care Cards page for more details.

Following some success in the use of the Care Cards for adult services and following requests from several organisations, Inspiration NW are about to launch Care Cards for children. This will include a range of pictures created by children’s illustrator Pete Bowman and include two characters ‘tiny ted’ and the ‘Inspiration NW dragon’.
The children’s care cards will be available to pilot from October 2011. Interested organisations should contact: Janet.Butterworth@northwest.nhs.uk
