Angela Coulter to Head Excellence Framework Editorial Board

The PEPP team are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Angela Coulter as chair of the editorial board for the Excellence Framework for Patient Experience.

The Excellence Framework document and website form a central part of the Patient Experience Policy Programme, currently in development by NHS North West for delivery in March 2012. It will offer practical guidance to policy makers, NHS managers and senior clinicians on the delivery of an exceptional experience of patient care, with contributions from many leaders in the field including Professors John Murphy (Manchester Business School) and Ray Fitzpatrick (Oxford University Department of Public Health).

On joining the Editorial Board, Dr. Coulter said “We’ve been talking about the need to improve patients’ experience for a long time but progress has been slow. I very much hope the Excellence Framework will encourage more concerted action to improve the quality of care.”

Dr. Coulter is an independent healthcare analyst/consultant who was previously chief executive of Picker Institute Europe, an Oxford-based charity specialising in measuring and improving patients’ experience. From 2000 to 2008 she was Chief Executive of Picker Institute Europe, a UK-based research charity specialising in measuring and improving patients’ experience.

Previous roles included Director of Policy and Development at The King’s Fund, and Director of the Health Services Research Unit at the University of Oxford. She holds Honorary Fellowships at the Faculty of Public Health and the Royal College of General Practitioners and she is a Trustee of National Voices.
She has published more than 250 research papers and reports and several books. She was the founding editor of Health Expectations, an international peer-reviewed journal on patient and public involvement in health care and health policy.

PEPP Director Mandy Wearne said “Angela is a major force in patient experience. I am delighted that she is joining the programme and look forward to her input”.
